A former 19th-century chapel to be reinvented, in the heart of the Morin Valley

In a peaceful hamlet of Jouy-sur-Morin, enveloped by the gentle landscapes of the Morin Valley, stands an old 19th-century chapel. Deconsecrated, but still imbued with spirituality, it now awaits a new life. Once an integral part of a workers’ village, this rare building bears witness to a preserved and recognized local heritage, listed as a municipal heritage site where each stone tells a fragment of history. Only 5 minutes from La Ferté-Gaucher and 20 minutes from Coulommiers, the site harmoniously combines rural calm and proximity to amenities. A rehabilitation project has already been validated with a building permit granted to transform this place into a bright and contemporary home, while respecting its original soul. The plans call for preserving the chapel’s exterior identity, its front door, its stained-glass windows, and its rose window while giving it a new functionality. Two of the old stained-glass windows will become French doors opening onto the garden, while mullioned skylights will bathe the interior in natural light. The interior design project imagines a vast cathedral living room, with nearly 7 meters under the ridge, enhanced by a wood-burning stove and an open kitchen. In the nave, two suites with bathroom and dressing room will be located, offering comfort and privacy. A contemporary staircase will lead to a mezzanine suspended above the living room, which will serve a third suite with bathroom and dressing room. A subtle balance between old and new, between stone and light. The whole rests on more than 7,000 sqm of wooded land, in a protected and flood-proof natural area, offering an exceptional green setting. The land is serviced on the street, with possible connection to the sewer system. Here, time seems to stand still.
