Choosing a contemporary house
Goodbye old stone walls! Hello roof terrace, giant picture windows and multiple volumes.

Very much of their time, contemporary homes make maximum use of new construction techniques to create innovative living spaces by adopting the best techniques, materials and processes available. While they often reflect the creativity of their architect, the majority have a number of characteristics in common.

Energy-efficient houses
Influenced by today’s ecological awareness, contemporary houses are generally designed and built to either reduce negative environmental impact or have a positive effect on the natural world. The majority are also bioclimatic, which means that they make the best-possible use of their environment and climate to become more efficient in terms of sound and heat insulation.
Modern architecture and natural daylight
Often cube-like in design, contemporary homes favour clean lines, right angles and multiple volumes. Many of today’s buildings opt for flat roofs that can be configured to provide additional outdoor living space. So where outdoor space is limited, a panoramic roof terrace extends the living area of the home to include the open air.

Flat roofs also provide the option of roof or skylight windows to create natural light wells inside the home. Natural light levels are also increased by making extensive use of large areas of glazing; another common feature of contemporary houses.

Although cuboid shapes are very common, they are not non-negotiable, and there are many contemporary houses that adopt a more classical style with a pitched or hipped roof.

Aesthetic, bright, eco-friendly and comfortable, contemporary homes offer nothing but benefits.
