France can boast superb luxury homes for sale all over the country. From sprawling villas on the water’s edge of the Atlantic coast to California-style homes in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean, the property listings contain many superb gems of all types and sizes. But what do we actually mean by ‘luxury home’? Price is certainly a major factor, but it’s not the only one. Generally speaking, houses are described as ‘luxurious’ when the asking price is above €1.8 million.
This level of financial investment is easily explained by location and a level of demand that outstrips supply: a private mansion in the heart of Paris for example, or a seaside cabin with a roof terrace just a stroll away from the water in one of the rocky inlets known as calanques in Marseille.The bottom line is that property is no different from any other asset; the higher the demand, the higher the price.

The more desirable the features, the higher the price! If, in addition to a cliff top location with breathtaking sea views, a villa also boasts an infinity pool, extensive landscaped gardens and outbuildings, you know it’s going to be in the super-upscale category.
The DNA of the building is also important, with some fine properties, such as manor houses, châteaux, large period houses and architect-designed or California-style homes rated on the same level as luxury homes. So the character of the property, its architectural style and plot size are all key criteria that directly influence its price and value. And ultimately, its prestige !
